They are also one of the first gothic metal bands, and very influential for all the early spectrum of the genre, with their albums from "Gothic" to "Draconian Times". Founded on March 26th, 1988. They wrote a song, "Blood Filled Eyes", at that first rehearsal, which was never recorded. Named after the poem Paradise Lost by the English poet John Milton. As of 2005, they had sold over two million albums worldwide. In October 2019, they announced the publication of "No Celebration: The Official Story of Paradise Lost", a biography of the band written by author David E. Gehlke and published by Decibel Magazine Books. In 1998, Holy Records released "As We Die For...Paradise Lost", a tribute album featuring Orphaned Land, Septicflesh and Misanthrope, among others. Fono Ltd. released "The Plague Inside: A tribute to Paradise Lost" in 2016. Not to be confused with the UK rock band that released a 3-song demo tape in 1987 and contributed the song "Watch the Spider" to the Ebony Records compilation Rock Meets Metal in 1987.
